Engineering Apprentice

Optek systems provide laser processing solutions to evolving technologies for customers which are often challenging the boundaries of materials processing. We are looking for an engineering apprentice to contribute to the success of our laser micromachining machines which has a range of novel applications including Medical, New energy and sensors. As our apprentice, you will be exposed to all aspects of design and build, you will see product through from concept to delivery. The machines require an appreciation of many disciplines of engineering including, electrical, electronic, programming, mechanical and laser machining. Key aspects such as design for manufacture and machine safety are a key focus for the business.

This role is very hands on and practical, and will suit candidates who are keen to specialise in one discipline but have a general interest in all streams of engineering. You will be working on machine building and set up, which is varied customer to customer. There are opportunities in CAD both electrical and mechanical. 

This is a four-year level 3 apprenticeship delivered together with Oxfordshire Advances Skills in Culham. The future prospect of this role is being a fully skilled engineering technician, with the opportunity to make a valuable contribution to our business and further progress into bigger roles.

Starting salary is £15.000, increasing over the course of the qualification.

Working week: 37.5 hours

  • Be part of the team that design assembly and set up of custom machines including
    • Mechanical CAD
    • Electrical CAD
    • Panel Wiring- from Schematics
    • Motion Control- High precision stages
    • PLC Programming
    • Human interface
    • Pneumatics
    • Mechanical assembly- Work Instruction and 3D Models
    • Mechatronics set up- part handling
    • Laser alignment and set up
  • Set-up, maintenance, fault finding, and repairs to equipment.
  • Develop sound health and safety practices.
  • Use of our maintenance database to create and control equipment documentation, maintenance records, and fault reports.
  • Calibration of key equipment with the appropriate documentation, and latest external standards.
  • Ability to communicate and work with external companies.
  • Work competently and safely in order to develop necessary engineering technical skills and knowledge, as well as the functional skill and behaviours to be considered competent as an engineer.
  • Contribute to our Business Excellence activities, using common tools such as Practical Problem Solving, 5S, TPM and standardisation.
