Level 3 Mechatronics Technician

As a multi-skilled engineering technician, based at the Element Six Global Innovation Centre (GIC), you will work with maintenance and installation of high-pressure high temperature (HPHT) synthesis presses and other equipment supporting the innovation activities on site. This includes project work with internal and external professionals, requiring the ability to communicate and hand over technical information, both independently and as part of an engineering team. The GIC also covers many other aspects of mechanical, electrical, and chemical engineering, which together will allow for a comprehensive apprenticeship program.

Duties and tasks:

  • Develop sound health and safety practices through a practical and hands-on approach 
  • Maintenance, fault finding, and repairs to equipment 
  • Become proficient in the use of Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS), to create and control equipment documentation, maintenance records, and fault reports 
  • Develop an innovative and pro-active approach to improve operation and reliability of equipment and to contribute to projects within the GIC 
  • Ability to communicate and work with external companies 
  • Develop the ability to interpret wiring schematics, hydraulic and pneumatic diagrams, and modify and interrogate them for troubleshooting purposes 
  • Setting and operating of manual and CNC lathes and milling machines 
  • Foster a proactive mindset to actively participate in continuous improvement and Business Excellence initiatives, utilizing common tools like Practical Problem Solving, 5S, TPM, and standardisation 
  • Develop the ability to competently carry out installation, set-up, maintenance, and repairs on equipment in the various workshops and laboratories at GIC 
  • Proactively look after your own apprenticeship development in discussion with your line manager at Element Six and OAS. Work safely and proficiently to develop technical skills and knowledge, as well as the functional skills and behaviours required from a competent engineering technician 

Criteria skills:

  • Possession of 5 GCSE grades A* – C or grades 4 – 9 in subjects including Maths, Science and English 
  • Computer literacy 
  • Aptitude for system assembly and technical fault finding 
  • Good motor skills and naturally skilled at using hands to solve mechanical problems 
  • Excellent problem-solving skills – proactive team player 
  • Good social and communication skills – positive attitude 
  • A solid interest in pursuing an engineering career 
  • Enthusiastic and keen to learn 
  • Must thrive in a diverse environment and be flexible in response to operational demand 
  • Must have a conscientious mindset 
  • Ability to present yourself professionally when working with a wide range of people, including operators and technicians, but also scientists, engineers and management professionals 
  • Understanding of and compliance with Health & Safety policy requirements and a willingness to contribute to a safe working environment
