International Women in Engineering Day 2021

23 June is International Women in Engineering Day, or INWED for short. Now in its eighth year, INWED is an international awareness campaign that raises the profile of women in engineering and focuses attention on the amazing career opportunities available to women and girls in this exciting industry.

INWED was started in 2014 by the Women in Engineering Society (WES) as a national campaign in the UK. Since then, it has grown enormously, receiving UNESCO patronage in 2016 and going truly global the following year.

This year’s theme is ‘Engineering Heroes’ in celebration of the amazing work that women engineers around the world are doing, not only in response to the COVID-19 pandemic but also to support lives and livelihoods every day.

Although face-to-face activities and celebrations are restricted for the second year running due to the ongoing pandemic, there are plenty of virtual events and online activities you can get involved in to celebrate the contributions of women engineers.

At OAS, we’ll be myth busting with some of our fantastic women engineers who are talking honestly and candidly about what it’s really like to work in STEM. Keep an eye on our social media feed to hear about their experiences and join in the conversation. You can also click here for a list of all the INWED 2021 activities both in the UK and worldwide, and find out more about WES and their work to inspire women in engineering here.
